Pet Food Stamps

By Susan Hartzler, Examiner.com

Los Angeles pet owners can now apply for Pet Food Stamps. Founded in New York by Marc Okon, this non-profit organization is designed for low-income families to offset the costs of feeding their pets. Today, about 50 million Americans receive Food Stamps, many are unable to feed their animals.

Guardians are left with no other choice but to drop them off at their local animal shelter and many will be put to sleep.

Shelters in Los Angeles hope this program will help keep animals off the streets and out of overcrowded shelters.

A record number of pets have been turned into the pound since the recent recession and housing bust. More than 4,500 pets are already signed up for the program. The charity offers free monthly delivery of pet food for families that qualify for the program through PetFoodDirect.com.

LA pet lovers who want to help can go to www.petfoodstamps.com to donate funds. Low income-families can also sign up for the service on that website.
