Texting could be your emergency lifeline. You’ve probably heard that during major emergencies, telephone lines quickly get overloaded and instead of a reassuring dial tone you hear that fast “beep-beep-beep” that tells you “all circuits are busy.”

Not what you want to hear when you’re trying to reach a loved one to tell them you’re okay.

Even cell networks can stop working. For voice calls, that is. But text messages often can get through.

So if you’re of a certain age and think “texting” has something to do with school books, find a teenager who will teach you the basics so you can at least contact family members during emergencies when voice calls may go pfffft!
